With all the presentation preparations and final exam studying, I wanted some instrumental music to listen to in the background. What I ended up doing was buying the rest of the Ratledge era Soft Machine, so everything post Third. Volumes 1 & 2, and Third contain vocals, but Fourth, Fifth, Six, Seven and Bundles are mostly pure fusion instrumentals.
Of the post Third output, I enjoy Bundles the most, probably due to it being their first album since the debut that has electric guitar. I really like Seven too. Posted here is the opening track. It’s got this really sweet organ / electric piano riff overdubbed with a synth solo while a solid drumming performance takes the background.
