When Hairway to Steven first came out, all you had were those sketches and numbers to refer to the tracks. The titles were later found out by matching the songs up with an official live album.
I Saw an X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas, John E. Smokes and Fast kinda makes some sense when looking at the respective sketch.
I think I may prefer “Defecating Man with an Erection Pitching to Urinating Woman with a Baseball Bat” over “Jimi” though.
Butthole Surfers - Human Cannonball / U.S.S.A. / The O-Men
The middle three songs off of Locust Abortion Technician. From what I hear this is the album NOT to listen to while taking acid, but from my perspective, it puts me in a bit of a lovely place. Sludge-y noise rock.
Human Cannonball - Almost normal rock song. The only thing that comes close to being called a song on the entire album.
U.S.S.A. - Industrial noise.
The O-Men - Thrash parody.
This was the first album I listened to when I drove my car home from the dealership. Very important to me.
When I was younger, I used to think, “Butthole Surfers? Ween? Pft. Who needs these immature jokesters? Well I never.” /repositions monocle
Some time passed and now they are my two favorite American bands of the past 30 years.
Sure, the silliness is there, but what I didn’t realize there was such a sensibility for art, pop and general weirdness in addition to each having a really fucking talented guitar player. Butthole Surfers go more towards the weird and Ween, the pop. But they are distinctly their music.
I’ll post songs from their best albums over today and tomorrow.
Also, the guy I got my grad school recommendation from I met through an internship, but all we talked about were the Butthole Surfers and Ween. He was 52 years old.
